John Yap

Richmond-Steveston

John Yap is the BC Liberal candidate in Richmond-Steveston for the 2013 election.

He previously served as Minister of Advanced Education, Innovation and Technology, Minister of State for Multiculturalism, Minister of State for Climate Action and Parliamentary Secretary for Clean Technology;  he was also Chair of the Government Caucus and served on various legislative and government committees.  John chaired the BC Immigration Task Force which reviewed economic immigration to the province.

First elected in the riding of Richmond-Steveston in the 2005 provincial election, John was re-elected in 2009.

John has been active in the community as a Rotarian, being a charter member and Past President of the Richmond Sunset Rotary Club. He is also a member of Gilmore Park United Church, where he previously served as Board Chair. He also served as board chair of the Gilmore Gardens Seniors Centre. John previously served on the Seniors Advisory Council of the City of Richmond.  He is a charter honorary member of the Vancouver Diamond Lions Club.

Born in Singapore, John immigrated as a teenager to Canada with his parents and has lived in the Lower Mainland for the past 37 years, living in Richmond for 27 of those years. John attended Langara College and UBC where he earned a BSc and MBA.  Prior to entering public life John had a successful career in banking with one of Canada's major financial institutions. John is married with two adult children; he enjoys reading, golf and travel.
